HKU, a Boundless Campus Where Everyone Thrives
The Equal Opportunity Unit (EOU) at The University of Hong Kong is the first dedicated unit of its kind in Hong Kong, established to support the University’s commitment to creating, promoting and maintaining an environment of equality of opportunity for all members of the University community, free from discrimination and harassment. Since its inception in 2003, the EOU has made significant strides in promoting equal opportunities through the development of equal opportunity policy, complaint-handling procedures and campus‑wide engagement campaigns.
Vision
Our vision is to assist the University in creating an environment which provides equality of opportunity, and which is free of any discrimination and harassment.
Mission
- To enhance the sensitivity of the students and staff of the University on equal opportunity issues through education, administrative measures or otherwise.
- To handle discrimination/ harassment complaints and enquiries efficiently and impartially.
- To identify and recommend changes to policies/ practices that may be inconsistent with equal opportunity principles.
The EOU is supported by a team of Equal Opportunity Advisors (EOAs) and Equal Opportunity Student Ambassadors (EOSAs). EOAs are senior staff members nominated by their departments/units to serve as the first point of contact for advice on equal‑opportunity matters and mobilise students and staff to join equal‑opportunity initiatives. EOSAs are proactive student leaders who play a key part of our awareness‑building efforts. They are empowered to initiate and run diversity events of their own with professional training and resources provided.
Guided by a vision of an inclusive campus, the EOU takes a zero-tolerance stance against discrimination and harassment and acts swiftly in accordance with the University’s Equal Opportunity Policy to address related complaints and enquiries. The EOU also works closely with the University central support teams, academic offices and external partners who share our commitment to diversity and inclusion. Joining hands with the university community and stakeholders, the EOU continues to put equal opportunity in action and invites your support to help make HKU a boundless, discrimination-free campus where everyone thrives.
