The Equal Opportunity Unit organizes training sessions and workshops for staff and students throughout the year to raise awareness and understanding of equal opportunity issues. Our regular training activities include:
- Briefing at New Staff Induction – typically conducted quarterly throughout the year
- Briefing at Faculty Induction Programmes – typically conducted in August and September
- Training for Equal Opportunity Advisors – typically conducted in the second semester
- Training for Equal Opportunity Student Ambassadors – typically conducted in the first semester
- Briefing at student residences – any time throughout the year upon request
Equal Opportunity Festival – our annual event to promote awareness of equal opportunity values, typically held between October and November.
Understanding and Preventing Sexual Harassment on Campus
This session aims to increase awareness among students and staff about sexual harassment and its implications within the university community. The trainer will explain relevant legislation and illustrate key concepts with typical examples and real-life cases, ensuring participants understand both the legal framework and the practical realities of such issues. In addition, the session provides guidance on how to prevent sexual harassment and offers strategies for dealing with incidents effectively, equipping attendees with the knowledge and confidence to foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive campus environment.
First Responders Training for Equal Opportunity Advisors and Residential Hall/College Staff
This training equips EOAs, hall and college tutors, and relevant staff to provide effective support to students and colleagues facing concerns related to discrimination or harassment. It covers basic legal concepts of unlawful discrimination/harassment, self-management strategies, informal resolution skills, and formal resolution under University procedures. The training is designed for new participants as well as those seeking introductory or refresher learning to strengthen their ability to respond appropriately and confidently to equal opportunity issues.
Issues in Human Resources Management under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance
Queries related to equal opportunities frequently surface in various aspects of human resources management, specifically under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance. These may include managing sick leave and performance appraisal. This training will cover relevant legal provisions and offer practical advice on effective management strategies and responses to these complex issues. All colleagues, particularly those with supervisory roles and duties, are welcome to participate in this talk.
Issues in Human Resources Management under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance and the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance
This training session aims to equip HR professionals and all colleagues with supervisory roles and recruitment duties with a comprehensive understanding of how to manage workplace issues within the framework of the two anti-discrimination ordinances in areas such as maternity leave, lactation breaks, urgent family needs, and handling sexual harassment at the workplace. The trainer will offer insights into the legal aspects of these ordinances, their practical implications, and effective management strategies to ensure a fair and supportive work environment for all employees. All colleagues are welcome to participate in this training session.
Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs (SEN)
CEDARS and the Equal Opportunity Unit jointly organising a webinar to increase awareness across campus about support for students with special educational needs (SEN). As the one-stop student service and resources centre, CEDARS is committed to support students with SEN in overcoming barriers, achieving successful university education and in promoting inclusivity at HKU. In this online session, Counselling Psychologist of CEDARS, will introduce the SEN Support Services and the roles of staff in supporting students with SEN.
