The Equal Opportunity Committee of The University of Hong Kong was established in 2003 to review and promote equal opportunity across the University community. It is chaired by Professor Peng Gong, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development).

 The powers and duties of its committee members are outlined below:

  • To advise on the introduction and operation of systematic procedures, for attaining a position in the University whereby every member of the staff and every student has the right to enjoy all of the benefits appropriate to his or her University membership or employment without discrimination or distinction of any kind where such are based on birth or other status, race, colour, national or social origin, language, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, marital status, pregnancy, family status, physical and mental condition, disability, religion, political or other opinion, property, etc.
  • To advise the University, its staff and students regarding policies, good practices and positive steps, such as affirmative action, for enhancing integration and diversity.
  • To keep under review the University policy in providing equal opportunities for all its members and the public, in accordance with the general direction given by the Council. 
  • To advise on 
    • the direction of development for the Office of the Equal Opportunity Officer (EOO) of the University; and 
    • the general approach and the priorities of activities to be undertaken by the Office of the EOO. 
  • To establish working groups, as are necessary for the work of the Committee, and to receive regular reports from these working groups on plans, action priority, implementation and outcome.
  • To report to the President & Vice-Chancellor annually and at other times as necessary. 

If there is any inconsistency or ambiguity between the English version and the Chinese version, the English version shall prevail.
